There’s still 139 days to go until Christmas Day, but some people just can’t help themselves and love to have all of their Christmas shopping done by October, with their spectacular trees and decorations not far behind. While others say ‘bah humbug’ to the lot and frantically leave everything to the last minute.
However one British department store has got into the festive spirit way earlier than normal this year, as Selfridges launched their Christmas shop more than four months ahead of the big day.
They might be onto something though as research has shown that if you’re itching to break out the Christmas decorations way ahead of time, it could actually make you happier. According to website Unilad, decorating your house early often brings back positive emotions and memories from your childhood.
Psychoanalyst Steve McKeown added that it could also be an escape for many people: “In a world full of stress and anxiety people like to associate to things that make them happy and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of childhood.”
Not only can decorating your home fill you with festive joy, it could also help you bond with your neighbours. A study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, revealed that decorating the outside of your house makes you appear more friendly.
So, how early is too early? Europe might be in the middle of a scorching heatwave, but high-street retailer Selfridges became the first department store in the world to open its Christmas shop this year – opening its doors 145 day before December 25.
The high-end retailer already has more than 500 products currently on offer with the second stage of the festive shop set to open its doors on September 4 when the selection will increase to an impressive 3,800 options, Bazaar reports.
While some shoppers feel annoyed at how commercialised the festive period has become, others actually don’t mind it. Many agree that it makes it easier for shoppers to find exactly what they are looking for and, more often than not, remind them that they do have a celebration to prepare for.
Opinions, however, seem to be split with many people agreeing anytime before December is far too early to start decorating, with the majority of people saying that they begin decorating their house just one to two weeks before Christmas day.
Posting on online forum Gransnet, one commentator wrote: “I think any decs [sic] up before about 2wks before Christmas is crazy.”
Another reader said putting up the tree too early takes away the specialness, adding: “We put them up about a week before Christmas and they are usually down by 3rd Jan. Having them up any longer would drive me mad, even though I love them over the christmas period.”
However, another Gransnet disagreed and said they prefer to start a little early, as December can be a busy period. “I am starting to do the whole Christmas thing earlier as dec gets busier nowadays,” they wrote.
