7 everyday habits you didn’t know were ageing you

Let’s be honest, a lot of us spend a significant amount of time and money on products trying to keep that youthful glow and spritely energy, but did you know a few bad habits could be putting all those good intentions to waste?

A few simple and seemingly harmless habits could be silently ageing you without you even knowing, turning all those good intentions into wasted time.

Thankfully, most of these habits are things we can easily change and put an end to without too much trouble.

Here are the top 10 bad habits that are ageing you:

1. Using soap

Soap is great for thoroughly cleaning the germs off your body but using it on your face is a different story. Soap tends to dry out the skin and remove the top protective and moisturising layer, leaving it vulnerable to fine lines and wrinkles. Switch to a chemical-free cleanser instead and apply a soothing moisturiser afterwards.

2. That afternoon treat

What we put into our bodies is reflected on the outside, so greasy, carb-heavy and high-sugar foods are a no-no. These highly processed foods can cause everything from breakouts to dry skin and leave you feeling lethargic throughout the day. Stick to fresh fruits and vegetables and try to snack on nuts and dried fruit instead of biscuits and sweets. It’s not all bad though – the odd slice of chocolate cake never hurt anyone!

3. Not enough sleep

A lack of sleep can cause all kinds of problems for our bodies and is directly linked to an increase in obesity and heart conditions. Not getting enough Zzz’s also damages your skin, which produces collagen when you sleep, meaning the longer you sleep the more time your skin has to plump itself up and fight off those wrinkles.

4. Your pillowcase

Turns out your pillowcase has ulterior motives – to give you fine lines and wrinkles! Sleeping on your side on a cotton pillowcase can cause the material to bunch up under your face making an imprint that can turn into wrinkles over time. Try using a silk or satin pillowcase, which smoothes out easily and helps maintain moisture in your skin.

5. Skipping exercise

Regular exercise is important for both our mental and physical health. Working up a sweat increases blood flow and works to tone your muscles and strengthen your body. Don’t be surprised if you find your skin is glowing after a good workout – the sweat helps to eliminate toxins and produce a fresh-faced finish. Exercising is also a great way to clear the mind, de-stress and take time out for yourself. A brisk walk, leisurely swim, some simple stretches are a great place to start.

6. Watching TV

A study by the University of Queensland found that for every hour you watch TV you may reduce your lifespan by up to 22 minutes. That’s enough to make anyone switch off the box and head outdoors!

7. Retiring… your brain

The brain is like a muscle and needs regular exercise just like your body does. Stay sharp by keeping up with current affairs, tackling crosswords and puzzles and trying new hobbies. You’ll find your memory improves the more you work your mind and you’ll be actively fighting of diseases like Alzheimer’s.
