Who doesn’t have a jar of Vaseline at home? It’s a useful product but chances are you aren’t using it to its full potential.

Did you know that a little tub of Vaseline/petroleum jelly has many more benefits than just as remedy for cracked lips?

Here’s 20 of the best ways to use Vaseline that we have found!

1. Shine patent-leather shoes

Just after you buy any leather item, be sure you rub it all over with Vaseline to product it. It will also make it shine and repel stains.

2. Keep ants away from pet food bowls

It can be frustrating for both you and your pet to see ants around the bowl, but this can be fixed. Simply wipe Vaseline around the rim of the bowl.

3. Stop squeaking door hinges

It’s so annoying when a squeaky door makes a constant noise, especially in a quiet house at night. Put petroleum jelly on the hinge pins of the door.

3. No more messy manicures

It can be hard to keep the nail polish from running over on your cuticles. To stop this, simply wipe petroleum jelly along the base of your nails and the sides.

4. Smooth wiry eyebrows

As we get older, our eyebrows can tend to be a bit wiry, but this is an easy fix. Simply rub the jelly into your eyebrows then comb with an eyebrow comb.

5. Coat your lashes

Put a coat on your eyelashes before you go to bed. Lots of people swear by this – and say it will make your lashes grow longer and thicker over time.

6. Make putting earrings in easy

Vaseline lubricates ear lobes and helps to make earring insertion easy and painless.

7. Lip scrub

Put Vaseline on your lips, leave it a few minutes, then scrub your lips with a toothbrush to exfoliate and leave them smooth and soft!

8. Soothe cracked heels

Cracked heels can feel very sore, which is where Vaseline can come in handy. Lather your feet with petroleum jelly and pop on some socks. Your feet will feel softer and smoother.

9. Protect your sore nose

In winter, it’s easy for our noses to get red from the cold and from illness. Dab some Vaseline around your nostrils to soothe the area.

10. Keep dye off your skin 

This trick will really help out if you dye your hair at home. Before you put your gloves on to apply the dye, use a finger to smear Vaseline around your forehead, ears and nape of your neck. This will stop any dye getting on your skin.

11. Prevent chafing

If you’re prone to chafing, apply some Vaseline to the area.

12. Make perfume last longer

If your perfume doesn’t seem to be lasting the distance, apply some Vaseline before you spray to hold in the scent.

13. Remove makeup stains from clothing

Rub in some Vaseline before washing a makeup stain and it’ll come out in the wash.


14. Repair wood furniture

Cover scratches with Vaseline, let sit for 24 hours then rub into wood, wipe away and polish.

15. Remove a stuck ring

Over the years, our rings can swell over our fingers. If yours is getting a bit tight, put Vaseline on your finger and pull off easily.

16. Prevent rust

If you’re worried about a certain item getting rusty such as a car scratch or a door hinge outside, apply some Vaseline to stop the rust forming.

17. Keep shower curtains sliding

Shower curtains having trouble sliding along? Put Vaseline on the rail.

18. Candles

Get your candles out of the holder with no wax residue by coating in Vaseline before you put the candle in.

19. Keep shampoo out of eyes

Do you get shampoo in your eyes a lot? Put some Vaseline above your eyebrows to make the water drop to the side. This is great for your grandkids too!

20. Never have lipstick teeth again

Lipstick on your teeth can be embarrassing, especially if no one told you. Rub some petroleum jelly onto your teeth before you apply – this is a trick used by beauty pageant contestants!

  1. When I worked on the advertising account for Vaseline they mentioned parents putting Vaseline on the outer door nob was a wonderful ‘child’ proof system for that Sunday morning sleep in.

  2. Scratch on a flat computer screen? All is not lost. Wipe a thin coat of Vaseline across the scratch, not along it, and very gently wipe the excess off, again, across the screen. This fills the gap and it almost disappears! It’s not a complete fix, but after a while you’ll forget it’s even there.

    Petroleum based, can’t use as it strips my skin, I get a rash and itch like crazy. Try beeswax, it is probably just as good or even better

    When you’re colouring in with pencils you can use Vaseline for blending colours and shades. Lots of clips on YouTube about this one.

  5. I suffer with dry skin in my ears I use Vasaline to keep it moist works great the dryness is getting less over time

  6. It is great for getting stiff zippers running again. My late husband was a motor mechanic and wore overalls that zipped up the front, so Vaseline was always at hand.

  7. If you’ve joined the Adult Colouring craze, dip the pencil in Vaseline – makes a wonderful blending medium!
