One in six Australians are affected by cardiovascular disease, accounting for more than 3.7 million Australians[i], according to the National Heart Foundation of Australia.

“Poor lifestyle choices, which include overindulgence of calorie-rich and nutrient-poor foods, inactivity, and the still present – albeit decreasing – incidence of smoking are important factors,” according to leading cardiologist and media commentator Dr Ross Walker.

When you add the increasing rates of diabetes and obesity into the mix, heart disease remains a serious issue in Australian society.

However, a natural therapy capturing the attention of medical experts for its heart health benefits is Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract.

“The health benefits of garlic has been researched for many years, but over the last decade there has been increasing work around Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract, and the active compounds found in raw garlic,” Walker says.

When it comes to coronary artery disease, Walker says the central cause is the progressive build-up of fat, inflammatory tissue and calcification within the walls of the arteries, medically referred to as ‘atherosclerosis’.

“The research around Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract has shown reductions in the cholesterol profile, improvements in vascular function, improvements in the microcirculation and a powerful antioxidant effect,” Walker says.

Such positive results have also led researchers to look at how Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract could be used to support normal blood pressure in healthy individuals.

How does Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract support cholesterol and heart health?

Walker says that both the medical profession and the public have been misled when it comes to cholesterol and heart disease.

“There is a strong misconception that high total cholesterol leads to heart disease, while the reality is that the evidence for this is rather weak and only really pertains to very specific situations,” he says.

“Over the past decade, consumers have become more aware of the so-called ‘bad cholesterol’, LDL, and the so called ‘good cholesterol’, HDL. However, this approach is simplistic and fails to take into consideration that both LDL and HDL could be contributing to heart disease – it’s particle size and number of each that matter most.

“Small LDL particles are pro-atherogenic – which means they contribute to the build-up of fat in artery walls. Only when small LDL particles becomes oxidised does the process of atherosclerosis begin and progress into the arterial wall,” he says.

“Small HDL is also pro-inflammatory and therefore also contributes to the atherosclerotic process.

“Yet both large LDL and large HDL have been found to have positive effects on the body and especially the heart.”

Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract may help reduce oxidation of LDL cholesterol, which directly affects the atherosclerotic process, says Dr Walker.

“Recent work performed by professor Matthew Budoff at the University of California, Los Angeles, has demonstrated a significant reduction in the progression of heart disease, in patients with proven heart disease or at high risk, with a standard daily dose of Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract,” Walker says.

He also says that in an Australian study performed by Dr Karin Ried, 1.2 grams of Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract on a daily basis was found to reduce blood pressure and may be used alone or alongside a blood pressure lowering medicine, as advised by your healthcare professional.

Aged Garlic Extract may also be suitable for people who are looking for a natural alternative to help support their cardiovascular health, or for immune support, like Sue Van Gaal.

Van Gaal says she has been taking two capsules a day for more than three years, which she believes has helped to support healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

“My blood pressure has been stable at 145 over 84 and my total cholesterol has been recorded at 5.6,” Van Gaal says.

“Due to an unfavourable history of family heart disease I have spent half my life searching for a natural medicine therapy,” Van Gaal says, highlighting that it is hard to ignore the results she has seen personally since commencing Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract.

While regular garlic is good for your digestion and immune system, Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract is a very different form of garlic supplement. It has more potent active ingredients, fewer side effects, and better standardisation of dosage than fresh garlic, garlic oil or garlic powder.

Dr Walker always recommends speaking to your healthcare professional before taking Aged Garlic Extract.

Kyolic Aged Garlic Extract can be purchased from your local pharmacies and health food stores.

I’ve been taking Britain’s chemist, Boots’ odourless garlic capsules for years, also helps against synus and various infections.

  2. Jude Power

I’ve been taking 4 tsp of Psyllium Husks most mornings mixed into my porridge and have successfully lowered my “bad” cholesterol level to 5.9, rather than continue taking statins: the “side” (for which read negative) effects were so severe with every brand and dosage I decided I’d rather risk a second heart attack. More than 5 years after the heart attack and after taking the husks for nearly four years, an recent echocardiagram showed no problems with my heart. IMPORTANT: never take the husks dry as they expand on contact with liquid, which could lead to choking.
