The foods and herbs that have natural antibiotic properties

When we’re sick, it’s normal for our doctors to prescribe us with antibiotics and other medicines. Of course we take them, but many are not aware that the foods we eat actually contain antibiotics within them that can both get rid of illness and prevent it.

The below are suggestions only, and we do not suggest stopping medications without consulting your doctor first.

So instead of waiting until you get sick to get better, you can start building up your immune system in advance.

The following are known as “astringent” foods – they naturally cleanse your blood without harmful side effects or upsetting the delicate balance of good bacteria in your body.

1. Garlic

Raw garlic releases a compound called allicin, which has similar properties to penicillin, when crushed or chewed.

You have no doubt heard about the benefits of garlic throughout your life, and that’s because it’s an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-parasitic, anti-fungal, and antioxidant.

Garlic may be strong, but it contains a host of vitamins, nutrients, and minerals that are beneficial to making you feel healthy and strong.

2. Honey

Ancient Romans used honey on the battlefield to treat wounds and prevent infection, and to this day, civilisations all over the world still use honey as it is one of the best natural antibiotics, antimicrobials, anti-inflammatories, and antiseptics known to man.

Manuka honey is particular has been proven to have the highest levels of antioxidants and curative powers. Interestingly, honey contains hydrogen peroxide, a natural chemical which helps your body fight infection and prevents the growth of bacteria.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

We’ll talked about the wonderful benefits of ACV many times on this site and for good reason: the benefits of daily doses of apple cider vinegar (ACV) include antibiotic and antiseptic properties, naturally alkalising your system, and can aid you in everything from managing your weight to lowering cholesterol and your risk of cancer.

4. Organic Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has naturally occurring anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties and is packed with antioxidants that are specific to it.

You can it to boost your immune system, balance your thyroid, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels, and even improve brain function.

5. Echinacea

You may have used echinacea for your cold or flu but this antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral solution is great for many other ailments and overall health. With that said, it should not be taken for more than 10 days at a time due to its potency.

6. Oil of Oregano

Essential oils created from herbs are considered some of the greatest natural healers. One of them is oil of oregano – it’s anti-microbial, antibacterial, anti-parasitic, anti-viral, and anti-fungal.

It can be used internally and externally in the treatment of wounds, respiratory problems, digestive upset, and even the common cold.

7. Cinnamon 

Cinnamon sticks and powder are great antifungal and antibacterial agents. Combine cinnamon and honey for a well-rounded antibiotic effect.

8. Turmeric

The bright yellow spice that gives curries their rich colour but did you know it has amazing healing properties? It can be taken internally or applied directly to the skin. Try making turmeric into a paste by adding water or even manuka honey and applying to the infection.

9. Cabbage

There are sulphur compounds found in cabbage that have been shown to be cancer fighting.

What many people don’t realise is how much vitamin C is found in cabbage: it has 75 per cent of your daily required intake.

It’s also great for improving digestion and is a natural weight loss manager.

Allspice, thyme, cinnamon, basil, rosemary, cayenne, chili peppers, cloves, ginger, anise, mustard seed.
