The common tropical fruit that can calm arthritis symptoms

For those of us who are suffering from arthritis, it can be hell. We’ve tried everything and sometimes, even that isn’t enough. It can be managed however, with a good diet and medication, but did you know there is one tropical fruit we may have overlooked?

Known for its sweet taste and seasonal presence, pineapple is a staple in our houses in summer, although it is available all year round. But pineapple is not just great to eat for the refreshing taste, it has health benefits for arthritis sufferers.

Bromelain is the magic component inside pineapples and has historically been used to treat inflammation and injuries. Research published in the journal Planta Medica found that bromelain was superior to the chemotherapy drug 5-fluoraucil in treating cancer.

Bromelain works by reducing inflammation and stimulating the immune system. It is also effective as an alternative to acetaminophen and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in arthritis patients, providing an option for those that used Vioxx or a COX-2 inhibitor.

A study in Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology found that bromelain is effective in easing the pain and discomfort of hip arthritis. Additionally, the Arthritis Foundation has publicly stated that bromelain found in pineapples produces effects comparable to NSAIDs for relieving joint pain.

In over 10 studies, every one of them confirmed that bromelain provided health benefits for osteoarthritis patients.

So if you’d like to try pineapple for your arthritis, the core is where the majority of the bromelain is found. Take the core and juice it! It’s that easy really. Even better: pineapple can last cut for up to 6 days in the fridge.

Oh, and remember, eat your pineapple by itself and without additives – it’ll reduce the goodness. Fresh, organic pineapple is best, not canned pineapple or pineapple juice.
