One daily serving of this fruit could significantly lower your cholesterol levels

If you’re looking to lower your cholesterol but don’t want to sacrifice all your favourite foods, you’re in luck: scientists have revealed swapping solid fats for avocado boosts your health.

A new study found eating avocado ‘significantly reduces’ cholesterol levels, meaning it can lower your risk of heart disease.

Most people know avocados are high in fat and some think they should stay away from the tasty fruit but in fact it’s the opposite: adding the green fruit to your diet can assist in weight loss.

Scientists from the Hass Avocado Board, in California found people who eat avocado as a replacement for solid fats such as butter, have ‘significantly reduced cholesterol levels’.

Emiliano Escobedo, executive director, said: ‘This study supports the body of research showing the many benefits that fresh avocados have to offer when consumed in everyday healthy eating plans.’

The new study, published in the Journal of Clinical Lipidology, confirmed that swapping solid fats for avocados can ‘significantly change lipid profiles’.

Scientists analysed 10 different avocado studies to find the impact of avocado on cholesterol levels and found consuming one to one-and-a-half avocados per day ‘significantly reduced total cholesterol’.

Additionally, it also limited the ‘bad’ low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides when substituted for sources of fat, reports the Daily Mail.

Dr Nikki Ford, director of nutrition for Hass Avocado Board, said: ‘Fresh avocado, as part of a balanced diet, and as a cholesterol-free substitute for solid fats, can help be part of the solution for maintaining normal cholesterol levels’.
