Julia Louis-Dreyfus diagnosed with breast cancer

Former Seinfeld actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The 56-year-old shared the news on social media on Thursday, saying “1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Today, I’m the one”.

She’s kept her statement brief and took the opportunity to shine a light on those less fortunate.

“The good news is that I have the most glorious group of supportive and caring family and friends, and fantastic insurance through my union,” she wrote. “The bad news is that not all women are so lucky, so let’s fight all cancers and make universal health care a reality.”

News Corp reports she received her diagnosis the day after she won her record-breaking sixth Emmy Award last week.

She did not reveal at what stage her cancer had been detected or what type treatment she would be undergoing in the coming weeks.

However, a representative from HBO, which airs her hit show Veep, said production of the next season will be pushed back to accomodate her treatment.

Louis-Dreyfus looked to be in great spirits at the Emmys last Sunday, showing no signs she was awaiting her diagnosis.

She goofed around on social media throughout the night, sharing happy snaps and videos on her Instagram page.

The actress, who has become one of the most beloved comedians in Hollywood since starring as Elaine in Seinfeld, has been married to husband Brad Hall for 20 years.

They share two sons, Charlie and Henry.
