Your urinary system is comprised of the kidneys, ureters and bladder as well as sphincter muscles and the urethra. Each portion of the system works together to create, store and carry urine waste from your body once the nutrients from food.

The urinary system removes a waste product called urea from your blood into the kidneys so it can form urine, which is stored in the bladder prior to elimination. This is where problems with the urinary system can occur, as there can be infections in the kidneys.

This is why maintaining urinary system health is necessary to prevent conditions including UTIs, kidney stones and bladder infections.

Here’s a number of ways you can improve your urinary health:

1. Cranberries

Cleanse the urinary system and prevent infections with cranberries. The Cranberry Institute explains that cranberries contain proanthocyanidins, which are natural bacterial inhibitors. Use 100-percent cranberry juice, or a handful of organic cranberries.

2. Water

We say it all the time but drink water! Water is the most accessible urinary system cleanser and helps maintain total body hydration. If you have a kidney or bladder infection, drink two to four litres of water daily, to flush your urinary system of excess proteins in the urine. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can irritate the bladder.

3. Lemonade

Lemonade can help flush the kidneys. Lemon juice contains citrate, which helps to reduce kidney stone formation. To reap the benefits, drink at least one litre of unsweetened lemonade each day.

4. Baking soda

Baking soda is one of the best home remedies for bladder infection pain. You just need to mix a spoonful of baking soda in a glass of water, and drink it. Repeat this remedy daily till the symptoms subside.

5. Vitamin C

Increase your intake of vitamin C to improve your urinary health. Vitamin C helps to boost up the immune system and prevents the growth of bladder infection-causing bacteria.

6. Garlic

Garlic is one of the best remedies that help a bladder infection as it is a great anti-bacterial agent, which helps in curing the infection quickly.

7. Parsley juice

Parsley juice serves as a cleanser for the kidneys and flushes out toxins. It contains vitamins A, C, B, potassium, sodium, copper, thiamin, and riboflavin. All you need to do is take a few parsley leaves and boil them thoroughly. Strain it, cool it and drink it.

8. Apple Cider Vinegar

Both honey and apple cider vinegar work wonders for kidney related infections. Mix 2 tbsp of honey with 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar and drink daily.

9. Herbal tea

Anything herbal is good for the health of your body. Drinking herbal teas, such as chamomile tea, is an effective formula to treat many infections, including kidney related problems.

10. Aloe vera

Aloe vera is a great all-rounder is excellent at removing toxins out of the body through its effective cleansing mechanism. Consume aloe vera juice twice a day for the best results.

    I love garlic – eat in any opportunity – I feel much better/stronger/healthier after eating it – as a prebiotic I can feel it doing me good.

    but my partner is the opposite – it gives her gas and diarrhoea – so perfers to avoid it – each has their own unique metabolism.

  3. There may be a medical cause for frequent UTI’s. I had several last year, with pain and discomfort. Finally had cystoscopy which found a large stone in my bladder. I had an uncomfortable 36 hours passing fragments of the stone but since then all is well!
