Goodbye to the little blue pill: Viagra gets a new design

Let’s face it ladies, men in their 60s aren’t ready to go as quickly as they were in their 20s. It’s just life and they aren’t to blame. But when one of the only truly effective methods is Viagra and it takes a while to kick in, it can really ruin the mood. Thankfully, scientists have figured out a way to get Viagra into the blood stream…and fast.

Using much the same technology as Nicotine patches, the new look Viagra patch is being developed and could slash the time it takes to get an erection.

Erectile dysfunction is a common problem that affects one in five Australian men to some degree of over the age of 40. Statistics show that one in ten Australian men are completely unable to achieve an erection at all however experts are hoping with new technology, more men will get the courage to use Viagra in bed.

The new patch could be worn on the arm or abdomen, and it may curb common side-effects of the pill such as headaches, indigestion and muscle pain.

The patch could be ready in a few years after a breakthrough by scientists in Saudi Arabia and Cairo.

Patches containing minute particles of the drug were coated in thin layers of fat and chemicals to aid absorption into the skin with good success.

It is, however, expected to cost $25 while the pill is around $1 each.

Scientists from Cairo University and King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, said after the prototype was tested on rats, the Viagra successfully passed through the outer and inner layers of the skin.

In a report in the journal Drug Design, Development and Therapy, they said: “This could be a promising delivery system”.
