Don’t dismiss an itchy nipple: The truth behind this slightly embarrassing issue

Itchy nipples aren’t the most pleasant thing to talk about but there could be a health risk if you don’t take it seriously.

Nipples usually don’t make much of a fuss but then all of a sudden they can become incredibly itchy and inflamed.

There’s no need to panic, however you should get your breasts checked out if you are experiencing any worrying symptoms.

If your nipples have been looking or feel different than they usually do, it’s always a good idea to see a doctor.

Most of the time itchy nipples are not the sign of a health problem, however in very rare cases, itchy nipples can be a symptom of inflammatory breast cancer, or Paget’s disease.

Paget’s disease is a rare disease that is associated with breast cancer and is found in 1 to 4 out of every 100 breast cancers. It starts in the nipple or in the areola and can be itchy. If it isn’t treated, or if you scratch it, it can bleed and feel very sore and dry. Sometimes, it can be mistaken for psoriasis or eczema.

If you have nipple discharge, it is not always a sign of breast cancer, and could in fact be due to a hormonal imbalance or infection.

As for sore nipples, this is likely nothing to be worried about. Nipples are one of the most sensitive areas of our bodies and can be easily irritated if care isn’t taken.

However the usual reason for a severely itchy nipple is either eczema or simply the soap or detergent you use.

If you have an itchy nipple, it’s quite easy to treat – simply use a moisturiser or special nipple cream. You may also want to look for any irritating fabrics in bras and t-shirts, as well as the laundry detergent you’re using.
