Australians ate how much chocolate last year?

It’s no secret that Aussies love our chocolate but the amount we are eating is not something to be proud of.

The CSIRO has just revealed the results of our chocolate addiction and it turns out, it’s critical.

Among other junk food, it was found that Australians consume 32kg of chocolate person person per year. On top of that, our country scored just 61 out of 100 in the CSIRO’s Healthy Diet Score Survey.

“The scores were fairly unflattering across all respondents,” said CSIRO Research Director Professor Manny Noakes.

“If we were handing out report cards for diet quality Australia would only get a C”.

It’s damning evidence that shows just how bad our obesity epidemic has gone and how deep we are in. Despite health messages and the advent of the fitness craze, obesity rates are soaring in Australia.

Almost two in three Australian adults and one in four children are overweight or obese, according to the government’s Institute of Health and Welfare, and if there was ever a time to be concerned, it’s now.

“[Junk] food is no longer just an indulgence, its become mainstream and Australians are eating it each and every day,” said Professor Noakes.

“They also need to be more mindful of every bite they take by eating more slowly and consciously”.

The CSIRO of 40,000 Australians evaluated their diet based on a range of factors.

Tell us, will you be cutting down your consumption of chocolate? Or do you have a full blown choc addition? What can be done to help us make healthier food choices?
