A change is as good as a holiday

Have you ever come home from a holiday and struggled to get back into your exercise?

Next thing you know it’s 2 months later and you’re feeling like a sloth with your clothes starting to feel a bit tight. That’s because it is hard to get back into your exercise routine after a break, especially if you have let your activity drop off while you were away.

The answer is to stay active while you are on holiday. That doesn’t mean you have to stick to the same routine. In fact I recommend you do different things while you are holidaying.

Holidaying in some places, it’s hard not to be active, but that’s not the case for all trips, especially if you are travelling for business. In fact most people who travel for work or go on holidays to places that don’t lend themselves to activity, arrive home with a few extra kilos and find it hard to get back into their exercise routine.

It needn’t be that way.

In fact being away from home and your normal routine is a perfect opportunity to improve your fitness by doing things your body isn’t used to doing.

For example, if you normally cycle for your aerobic fitness but don’t have your bike with you, going for a run or walk gives your body a different workout and maintains your fitness (and weight).

At home, people often have to fit their exercise around busy work and family schedules. Being away from home, especially on holidays, provides the time to exercise without the pressure of work, family or other commitments.

So next time you are on holiday or travelling for work, take a good pair of shoes and some exercise clothes so you can do something different.

The added benefit of coming home after an active trip is that you’ll look forward to getting back into your regular exercise routine and won’t spend the first few weeks getting your fitness back to where it was before you left.
