9 natural ways to treat acid reflux

Acid reflux/heart burn can be so uncomfortable and can completely put you off food. But you don’t have to suffer in pain.

Here’s 9 home remedies for curing that awful feeling.

1. Apple cider vinegar

Not many people realise by acid reflux typically results from having too little acid in your stomach. You can easily improve the acid content of your stomach by drinking one tablespoon of raw unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a large glass of water every day.

2. Licorice

Research shows licorice helps to ease heartburn and get to the source of the problem. Try chewable licorice tablets before meals – there are some brands that don’t taste like licorice at all, which gives you the benefits of the aniseed without needing to taste like it.

3. Bi-carb soda

Bi-carb soda helps to neutralise stomach acid. Mix between 1/2 and 1 teaspoon of bi-carb with a glass of water and drink only occasionally.

4. Ginger tea

Ginger has been found to have a gastroprotective effect as it blocks acid in the stomach from going up the oesophagus. Add two or three slices of fresh ginger root to two cups of hot water and let steep for about half an hour. Drink about 20 minutes or so before your meal.

5. Slippery elm

Slippery elm coats and soothes the mouth, throat, stomach, and intestines, and contains antioxidants that can help with your reflux issue. Pour 2 cups boiling water over 2 tablespoons of powdered bark, then steep for 3 – 5 minutes. Drink three times per day to see results.

6. Bananas or apples

Bananas and apples contain natural antacids that can act as a defence against acid reflux. It’s one of the most effective and cheapest remedies for relieving heartburn.

7. Almonds

Eat some almonds after every meal, every snack, and every time you ingest something basically. Try to track down organic almonds if possible. Almonds neutralise the juices in your stomach, relieving and preventing acid reflux.

 

8. Lemon juice

Before you eat anything of a morning, drink a cup of warm water with fresh lemon juice. It’s a great digestive aid and will help you feel more full so you don’t desire fatty foods that cause acid reflux.

 

9. Sleep on your left side

Studies found sleeping on your stomach or right side can cause additional pressure, resulting in heartburn. Try to sleep on your left side if you are having recurring symptoms of reflux.
