2 in 3 Aussies aren’t doing this enough and it has some big health implications

Dec 08, 2014

Water is something that we all need – it is a fact of life. And now more than ever we have access to it everywhere. At the shops, at home, in parks and along bikeways. Between bottles, bubblers and taps, it is everywhere but a study by Thermos Australia has found that less than one third of us (29%) are actually drinking the right amount of water a day.

Dehydration is becoming increasingly common and this has some bad side effects… 69% of respondents noticed feeling dehydrated when they hadn’t had enough water, around 57% had headaches and 44% experienced exhaustion. It has also previously been found to have negative effects on your mood and it makes us a lot less productive.

According to the Daily Mail, a study from the University of Barcelona found that dehydration of just 2% impairs performance of the simplest tasks like throwing a ball or writing.

So how can we slowly increase our own intake of water without feeling overwhelmed? Here’s some tips to help you…

  • Keep a bottle with you all day and top it up when you’re near a tap
  • If you don’t like the flavour, try infusing it with mint leaves, strawberries or lime for a delicious kick.
  • Try drinking herbal teas twice a day.
  • Have water bottles ready to go in the fridge so it is easier to pull one out and start drinking than it is to sit down and pick up a soft drink.
  • Drink at least one tall glass of water with each meal you eat.

Do you think you are drinking enough water? How do you make sure you’re drinking enough?
