10 foods that boost your metabolism

If you’ve started noticing a decline in your metabolism, it’s nothing to be alarmed about. Unfortunately, it’s one of the natural occurrences as you get older.

While it’s normal for your resting metabolism to decrease as you get older, the downside is it can lead to weight gain, slowed digestion and low energy levels.

Metabolism is a complicated beast and part of how it functions is down to the food you eat, so here are 10 foods that are said to give your metabolism a real boost.

1. Avocado

With a high fat content (we’re talking good fats by the way) avocado is great for your body. The fat keeps you full and you’re also being injected with protein and fibre, which a all great for your metabolism. Add it to your diet by spreading it on your toast or including it in your salad. If you’re feeling brave you can also include avocado to smoothies, but we’re not so sure…

2. Garlic

Garlic is likely to be a regular part of most people’s diet because it can be used in almost all cooking. It’s delicious and smells great, but the metabolic benefit of garlic is that it helps to maintain and shred unwanted weight.

3. Grapefruit

Grapefruit and be bitter and unappealing, but it is also an amazing superfood. It boosts your metabolism and is full of fibre, which means you’ll be fuller for longer. The acidity of grapefruit also works to combat the stored fat in your body.

4. Green tea

Green tea has been found to increase your fat burning capability because it raises your fat oxidation levels by around 17 per cent.

5. High fibre cereal

No surprises with this one, and the fact cereals high in fibre have been scientifically proven to be the best breakfast food for people looking to improve their metabolism makes it even better. Cereals high in fibre digest much slower than other cereals, which will keep you energised for longer. The other benefit to high fibre cereal is how it regulates your insulin and prevents fat from forming on your body.

6. Jalapenos

The capsaicin found in jalapeno peppers gives your metabolism a big boost. Jalapeno poppers might be popular, but they aren’t good for you however, using the chilli in any other way won’t give you a heart attack and might actually be beneficial to your metabolism.

7. Lean meat

Lean cuts of beef and poultry support a healthy metabolism. If you weren’t already aware, meat takes a long time to digest and that means it also takes a lot of energy to digest. You’ll be burning fat just by eating it.

8. Oranges

Full of vitamin C, which helps you metabolise fat fast, oranges are a quick and easy snack. You can boost your immune systems too.

9. Raspberries

Raspberries are packed full of fibre and are also low on calories.

10. Salmon

Salmon is full of incredibly beneficial oils, nutrients and omega-3 fatty acids. You can lower your body’s leptin hormone levels by consuming salmon, which will also allow your body to burn more calories. An additional benefit to consuming salmon is the effect it will have on your hair and skin. Positively glowing!
