There’s a French fromage at Aldi that has sent cheese enthusiasts around the world into a frenzy, with many comparing the $6 creamy cheese to D’Affinois that retails for three times the price in other supermarkets.

Excitement over the cheese reached fever pitch this week when parenting website Kidspot ran an article singing the cheese’s praises, and sending Aussie mums running to the German supermarket.

“My name is Bek Day, and I have an ALDI cheese addiction. The cheese that has whipped me into such a frenzy is none other than the innocuous gooey square known to those in the know as ‘Le Pave’,” Day wrote.

Even though the Le Pave is not one of Aldi’s quick-to-sell “special buys”, the 200 gram product of “impossibly creamy goodness” flies off the shelves faster than some of their most popular items, Day writes.

“The problem is, of course, that everyone else in my suburb seems to have developed the same addiction simultaneously,” she adds. “For the past three weeks, the spot where the object of my affections once sat, in the refrigerated section of my local ALDI store, has sat empty.”

An ALDI Australia spokesperson told Starts at 60: “Le Pave is produced within the Pays de la Loire region of France at one of the largest remaining dairy cooperatives in the country. To ensure its quality, the product is airfreighted to Australia on a weekly basis.

Hundreds of customers on Facebook have written about how good the cheese is. “I’ve been buying their French cheeses since they started stocking them. Absolutely fantastic,” one commentator wrote.

Another added, “I have two of these in my fridge right now … just saying,” and a third wrote, “It is the absolute best!”

“Le Pave is currently available in select states, however is being launched nationally in the coming months,” the spokesperson said. “Customers who enjoy our Le Pave should also try our ‘La Brique’ cheese – a soft mild washed cheese that brings flavour from its own unique region. It combines perfectly on a platter with our Le Pave.”

D’Affinois retails for around $17 in major supermarkets — a figure almost three times the $6 price of Aldi’s Le Pave. For those looking to get their hands on the tasty cheese, you’ll have to be quick!

According to the latest survey by Roy MorganALDI’s success comes down to its discount prices and the reputation for reliability and meeting the needs of consumers.
