Coles have been forced to issue another nationwide recall after discovering some popular meat pies sold in the supermarket giant’s Express stores may have been packaged and labelled incorrectly – leading to customers unknowingly buying a completely different product.
According to an official warning by the store, some packages sold in the Big Yum Beef Pie range may have actually been filled with Big Yum Bacon and Egg pies instead – posing a potential risk to anyone with egg allergies.
“Some Coles Express Big Yum Beef Pie products contain the incorrect product, which contains a higher quantity of egg than declared on the label. Consumers who have an egg allergy or intolerance may have a reaction if they consume the product,” an official statement read.
“We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience.”
The recall specifically affects 175g Big Yum Beef Pies sold in Coles Express stores nationally. They have been available for sale since September 1 and have ‘Batch 235/18’ printed on the wrapper.
Customers who believe they may have bought the product should return it to the store immediately for a full refund, while Coles urges anyone worried about their health to seek medical advice.
The company alleged the mix up was the fault of the supplier and not Coles itself.
It comes after a massive nationwide recall of strawberries sold in major supermarkets including Coles, Woolies and more.
However, other than the fruit scandal, this is the first recall by the store since July when it was forced to recall Coles Sliced White Mushrooms 200g and 375g and Sliced Brown Mushrooms 200g. That recall was issued over fears they may contain large pieces of white plastic.
Costa Group, the country’s largest produce supplier, said at the time: “As soon as the issue was detected, even though there were no reported incidents, Costa advised food safety authorities of the intention to conduct a recall, and retailers were notified to withdraw the product from sale.
“While the probability of consumer impact is extremely low, and the large pieces of white inert plastic would be highly visible, consumers who have not used the sliced mushrooms are advised to return the product to the store of purchase to receive a full refund.”
