He left former royal butler Paul Burrell visibly stunned when he appeared to make contact with Princess Diana from beyond the grave on TV, but now psychic John Edward has revealed the truth behind the rumours – and what really happened in that controversial reading.

The medium and TV star appeared on the latest series of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! with Burrell in March, and sparked debate among viewers when he sat down to do a reading for him. Edward is famed for contacting loved ones from beyond the grave, as well as touring the world with sell-out shows and a hit program, Crossing Over with John Edwards, in the early 2000s.

Burrell, who was famously Princess Diana’s butler before she died, was left gobsmacked when John managed to repeat facts he stated “no one could possibly know” on air, appearing to hint throughout at Diana herself. While Edwards never confirmed who he was speaking about – and referred to the person he was communicating with as “he” – Burrell assumed the whole time that it was Diana herself.

Now, speaking in an exclusive chat with Starts at 60, John has cleared up rumours he spoke to the late princess directly, insisting the presence he felt was distinctly “male”.

“The person coming through, originally, I thought was a man,” he explained. “I get my information through symbols, and pictures, and words and feelings and thoughts, so I did not have an image of Princess Diana coming through in any shape or form.

“There’s no celebrity in the afterlife, just energy, so for me it’s like playing a game of working out what the symbols are. While these symbols come from them, there’s no physical bodies for them to make a sound, so it has to come through via these symbols.
For anyone I read, I hope it brings them some kind of inside connection, awareness, that’s my job.”

Paul insisted he had no idea who Burrell was when he first went on the show, and only discovered his past later on.

“I had no idea who anyone was when I went on that show. I was just told that there was another psychic who would also be on the show,” he added. “The God’s honest truth is that the woman who was sitting to his [Burrell’s] left, I thought they were together, because the woman was answering a lot of the stuff that was being said.”

While Paul couldn’t identify exactly who he was communicating with at the time, he told news.com.au recently: “Energetically I felt that his friend (who came through) was like a business partner.”

He has since blamed editing on the show for cutting out part of his reading for Burrell, which may have caused some confusion for viewers.

During the reading itself, Paul spoke about two car accidents, an old room with ornate furniture and even a dream Burrell claims he had about Diana herself – all leading him to believe he was speaking about her.

“So if you have a friend that passed in a vehicle accident. Okay…were there two car accidents?” he asked Burrell. “Because I’m feeling like there are two car accidents, almost like one was foreshadowing and the other one was like, tragic. Yes?”

Burrell looked utterly shell-shocked by what he was being told. “You couldn’t possibly know that,” he told Edward. “He reached inside me and rang a bell.”

Edward later asked Burrell why he moved or changed a photo, to which he replied, “that’s personal”. Edward continued to push, asking him if he understood why he moved the photo in question. “I did it to protect someone,” he said.

Elsewhere, he also sensed that he was in a bedroom with wood panels and books. He explained that he saw a piano to the side and a small glass bird. Burrell claimed they were details Edward couldn’t know and said he was describing Princess Diana’s bedroom. “He could not have known about a glass lalique bird in the princess’ room. Impossible.”

Edward later suggested that Burrell was concerned that some people (who viewers seemed to believe were Prince William and Prince Harry) weren’t going to know the real stories of their lost loved one. “I’m supposed to acknowledge that when we lose someone, sometimes that passing becomes what people define them as and it’s like no, you need to honour who the person was, who your friend was, what they did, okay?”

John Edward returns to Australia for his latest tour in October and November. For all ticket information, visit his website here.
