Kerri-Anne Kennerley rips into false magazine claims live on air

She’s been in show business for decades and is no stranger to reading articles about herself, but legendary TV star Kerri-Anne Kennerley has publicly slammed a magazine over a fake news article published in its pages this week. 

Speaking on Tuesday’s episode of Studio 10, the 65-year-old star called out New Idea for a “fake news” article they published about her. Co-host Joe Hildebrand held up a copy of the latest issue of the magazine and pointed out the article in question, titled “Kerri-Anne walks out: I Quit Studio 10”.

“That’s it! I quit,” the former Good Morning Australia host joked, waving her hands in an over-the-top way. “It’s right here in New Idea so it must be true.”

Guest co-host Todd McKenney pointed out the issue had actually hit stands on Monday and that if she had really quit, she wouldn’t be hosting the show on Tuesday.

“But that came out yesterday so if you’ve quit, you’re not really here because you quit,” he joked.

“She never really was here,” Hildebrand added, laughing.

The former 20 to One host explained that the article highlighted an apparent argument she was having with co-host Angela Bishop.

“What over?” Bishop asked, as Kennerley questioned which page the story was on, clearly implying the feud is non-existent.

The star, who was inducted into the Logie Hall of Fame last year, also denied that she and co-host Sarah Harris were arguing, while the article claimed her true loyalties were with Channel Nine. Fans will recall Kennerely had previously appeared on the network before making the switch to Channel 10.

New Idea also claimed she shocked her on-air colleagues by storming off set. In theatrical scenes, Kennerely promised to show her co-stars what storming off really meant by throwing her shoes and exiting the stage. Of course, it was all a big joke that earned cheers from the audience.

In addition to the article in the magazine, New Idea also has an article online, claiming the former Dancing with the Stars contestant wouldn’t be returning to Studio 10 in 2019. An “insider” told the publication Kennerley displayed “demanding behaviour” and that her “classic KAK ego has kicked in”. It also claimed she wasn’t happy with the ratings of Studio 10.

It’s not the first time a celebrity has called out a magazine for running fake stories. Last year, Australian actress Rebel Wilson took on Bauer Media and won after Woman’s Day published a series of stories claiming the star lied about her age and family history.

While she was initially awarded more than $4 million, the Pitch Perfect star was later ordered to pay back the publisher. She promised to appeal the decision.
