She’s one of the most controversial and well-known names in Australian politics, but now Jacqui Lambie has revealed every inch of her personal life to the world too – in a jaw-dropping and divisive TV appearance.

The 47-year-old appeared on Channel 7’s Sunday Night, as she searches for love for the first time in 15 years – and it led to sex toy parties, online dating, speed dating, in-depth revelations about her past mental health battles and even talk about sexting.

The former Tasmanian senator began with some unlucky meetings on a speed dating night, before meeting three men on dates at restaurants and bars.

“So I don’t have a bloke, first of all, because I guess I’ve been by myself for so long, I’ve just switched off on that side of life, and I’m actually finding that quite difficult,” she explained on the show. “I think that what I’m looking for is just a good Aussie bloke, can hold his own. Um, you know, doesn’t have too much drama in his life. Preferably none at all.”

She joked: “I’ve always said I’ll know it when the right man’s standing in front of me… I don’t know how many more men have to stand in front of me!”

Apparently not afraid to share every moment of her journey with viewers, Jacqui began by inviting Channel 7 cameras along to a sex toy party she attended, where the group were seen passing them round and laughing together – with Jacqui saying it’s the “most fun” she’d had in ages.

Taking a swipe at her fellow politicians, she then jokingly listed male pollies including “Turnbull” and “Shorten” as she held one of the toys in her hand.

Elsewhere, she shopped for some sexy underwear, and seeing a black G-string, she joked: “They don’t stay on long. Why spend all this money when they only stay on for two seconds?”

While she began with a speed dating night, some online dating apps including Bumble and Tinder, and even a Bachelor and Spinster Ball in NSW, she was eventually set up on three dates with a fly-out mine worker, an IT worker originally from Mexico and a single father.

The third man she met, Gregg, even invited her to meet his teenage son for dinner at his home on their second date, before they embarked on a third together.

However, beneath the humour she admitted some insecurities about dating again, and at one point told some friends: “It’s taking my clothes off that’s the issue – but we’re not getting there.”

Her friends urged viewers to look below the surface, as Jacqui appeared on-screen admitting: “I’m really nervous… This is starting to become quite scary.”

Revealing her dreams for the future, she told the show: “I want to get married and make sure I see it all the way through, through the good and the bad… I don’t want to have to go through a divorce. I want someone that won’t just be my partner but my best friend.”

Jacqui also opened up about her quest for love in a first person piece for the Daily Telegraph, and revealed her past mental health battles impacted her love life too.

“Before I spent my few years in the Senate I struggled for a decade with pain and depression caused by the major back injury I suffered in the Army,” she wrote. Jacqui went on to slam the online dating apps, and added: “I reckon there should be a Senate inquiry into those apps; they’re just not all they’re cracked up to be. If you ask your mates, everyone has had a tough time meeting people online or via Bumble and the rest of them.”

The entire show sparked a very mixed response on social media, with both viewers and her fellow politicians weighing in on the debate.

Victorian senator Derryn Hinch blasted her appearance, writing on Twitter: “Jacqui Lambie. We worked so well on worthy legislation. Wish you were back. Tonight’s TV was cringeworthy. Vomitville. You’re so much better than that.”

Meanwhile, some hit out at the segment focusing on such intimate details, with one Twitter user writing: “Thanks SN – I was feeling a bit ordinary today, wondered if I ate something off? But after watching @JacquiLambie and friends play with dildos on tonight’s show, I was able to throw up everything I ate this month…”

However, others applauded her for going on air in such a deeply honest appearance, with one Twitter user writing: “Oh @JacquiLambie I love you! #sundaynight.” And one wrote: “@JacquiLambie enjoying the show on your dating experience.”

Did you see the interview? Are you a fan of hers? Do you think it was a good idea to open up her love life on TV?
