Bruce McAvaney shows off dad dancing in funny video after cancer diagnosis

He revealed last year that he had been battling cancer for two years, but popular Aussie newsreader Bruce McAvaney hasn’t let his health concerns slow him down as he made a rare appearance on social media this weekend to show off some amazing dance moves.

The 65-year-old, who has been one of the leading sports commentators and newsreaders in Australia for decades, revealed in March 2017, that he had Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia, a form of blood cancer.

While he had been diagnosed two years before, he only began feeling fatigued in 2016. He hadn’t started any treatment at the time as he wasn’t suffering any symptoms, but said he felt optimistic that he’d recover should he need to have any in the future.

Since then the TV star has remained tight-lipped on his health battles, but has now appeared in a hilarious video – shared by his Channel 7 colleague Rachael Finch on Instagram – flashing a beaming smile to the camera as he showed off his dance moves at the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Taking the lead position in front of his colleagues, the legendary commentator stood still as everyone began dancing in the behind-the-scenes look at a promo for Seven – before breaking into some classic dad dance moves himself.

Finch posted the caption #bruceownsthefloor and it got a flood of comments from adoring fans, with one writing: “How adorable is Bruce?? How can you not like him?”

Another added: “Nothing will be better than this,” and one wrote: “Hahahahaha bless him. He’s just out there livin his best life. [sic]”

It comes after Bruce thanked his fans for their support after revealing his cancer diagnosis last year.

“I’m going well. I have appreciated all the support I’ve had over the last 24 hours,” he said after returning to the hosting chair on live TV. “Two years ago I discovered I have a form of leukaemia, CLL. I have no symptoms and I’ve had no treatment.

“If I have to have the treatment the success rate is particularly strong. I’m very lucky. It’s a nasty word leukaemia, a lot of people are fighting it. I feel for them. In a small way I’ve been in their shoes for the last two-and-a-half years.”
