Helen Mirren looks forever young in Oriental-inspired outfit

Dame Helen Mirren was one of 150 invitation-only guests to enjoy a gala celebration of South Coast Plaza’s 50th anniversary this week.

Wearing an Oriental-inspired top over stylish black pants and stylish strappy shoes, the 72-year-old actress showed a sassy side as she posed for photographs.

Asian themes, in particular Chinese detailing, has crept back into the fashion spotlight in a big way, with lots of mandarin collars, contrasting binding, silk fringing and superb colourful prints and embroidery all big hits on the catwalk of late. Mirren has gone for the modern mix of wearing one standout print piece with a plain colour.

The gala event included a concert by the renowned Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Valery Gergiev, followed by a four-course dinner. The theme of the night was ‘Art, Excellence and Friendship’,

Among the other guests was Schindler’s List star Ralph Fiennes, who spoke at the event.

“Perhaps of all arts, music is the one that can sidestep language,” Ralph Fiennes said . “Music reaches straight to the soul, putting borders and political and national differences out of focus. Music, I believe, is the great healer. It’s the great unifier.”

Other in attendance included Princess Michael of Kent, Plácido Domingo and fashion designer Mary McFadden.

Earlier this month it was announced Mirren would be honoured at the 45th annual Chaplin Award Gala in recognition of her incredible career which has spanned six decades. She will receive the prestigious prize on April 30, 2018.

The society’s board chairman Ann Tenenbaum said it an honour and a pleasure for us to present Helen Mirren with our 45th Chaplin Award. “From housemaid to Queen and everything in between, Ms. Mirren has delivered masterful performances of complex characters, upending stereotype after stereotype along the way,” Ann Tenenbaum said. The award was first given to Charlie Chaplin in 1972, and has been named in his honour ever since.
