Julie Andrews shows why she’s still a fair lady

The 60th anniversary edition of My Fair Lady is being directed by the very person who was the star in the original Broadway musical.

Julie Andrew, the beloved and much-honoured stage, screen and television actress whose career has spanned more than half a century, was in Brisbane this week for rehearsals before the show’s opening night in Brisbane tonight.

Andrews first came to fame as a young musical performer on stage and radio in her native England, then drew international attention with her appearances in films including Mary Poppins to The Sound of Music, and more recently The Princess Diaries.

She’s also published books – Mandy and The Last of the Really Great Whangdooles – and has now turned her attention to directing the show she originally performed in, which was the longest-running musical of its day.

With Charles Edwards as Professor Higgins and Anna O’Byrne as Eliza Doolittle, not to mention an equally talented cast and teams of designers, choreographers and much more behind the scenes of the reborn My Fair Lady, the stage show is expected to continue to smash box office records.

Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady opens in Brisbane on March 19, in Melbourne on May 16 and Sydney on August 24.
