A few weeks before her birthday …

A few weeks before her birthday, Gemma asked her mother an important question.

“I ask Santa for presents at Christmas, but who do I ask for birthday presents? I want a bike.”

“You ask God for birthday presents,” said Gemma’s mother. “But you haven’t been very good this year, Gemma. I don’t think God would get you such an expensive gift for misbehaving.”

“We’ll see,” said Gemma.

She went upstairs and began to write a letter to God.

Dear God,

I have been a very good girl this year and I would like a bike for my birthday. I want a red one.

Love,

Gemma

But Gemma knew it was a lie and God wouldn’t believe it, so she tore up the first letter and wrote a second.

Dear God,

I have behaved pretty well this year, and I’d like a red bike for my birthday.

Love,

Gemma

But this wasn’t true, and if Gemma told God the truth she knew she would never get the bike. So she crept out of the house and ran to the nearest church.

Looking around carefully, she picked up a statue of the Virgin Mary and, hiding it in her jacket, ran home.

Then Gemma sat down to write her next letter.

Dear God,

I have your mother. If you want to see her again, send the bike.

Signed,

You Know Who
