Dolly Parton channels Barbie in skintight, sequinned awards gown
Dolly Parton may be known for her larger-than-life personality, amazing voice, and remarkable figure, but the 71-year-old is so much more than just a star of the stage and screen.
She’s also an influential philanthropist who’s raised millions of dollars for people in need of help. And she was honoured for her good works at a star-studded ceremony held by the Academy of Country Music (ACM) in Nashville, Tennessee, on Wednesday night.
Looking typically girly and glittery in a skintight, pink sequinned dress, Parton received the Gary Haber Lifting Lives Award for her charitable endeavours, which have recently included raising more than US$10 million (A$12.6 million) to rebuild a Tennessee town destroyed by fire, and assigning all of the proceeds from her new children’s album to her Imagination Library that supplies free books to kids around the world.
Since she started it in 1995, the library, inspired by Parton’s desire to encourage parents to read stories to their children, has given away more than 100 million books.
“I never dreamed our program would grow into something so large,” Parton said after receiving her award, USA Today reported.
Fellow country music star joined Parton on stage to honour Dolly by singing her own 1973 hit ‘My Tennessee Mountain Home’.
“If you’re ever in need, there’s nobody better than Dolly Parton,” Paisley told the audience, according to a report by CMT News.
Another country music veteran, Reba McEntire, won the Mae Boren Axton Award on the same evening, marking her longstanding dedication to the ACM.
