Angela Lansbury lands role in classic remake of Little Women

She’s been seen on stage, and on screen, from Bedknobs and Broomsticks to Murder, She Wrote.

Now 91-year-old Dame Angela Lansbury is set to star in a remake of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved 1868 novel Little Women.

She’ll play Aunt March, the cranky aunt in the popular coming of age drama.

Another big name, Emily Watson will play Marmee. The Hillary and Jackie star has just finished another television project, Apple Tree Yard.

Also joining the cast is Michael Gambon, an English actor known for the Harry Potter movies as well as numerous other movie and theatre roles, who will play the neighbour Mr Laurence.

But who plays the roles of the March sisters, the main characters? Mostly newcomers to the industry.

Maya Hawke may be a newcomer to acting but as the daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman she’s no newcomer to the industry. She plays Jo March.

Other roles go to Willa Fitzgerald, Annes Elwy and Kathryn Newton.

The three-part seriesPBS’s Masterpiece will begin shooting this month.

The 1868 book has already been made into several movies and television adaptations. Elizabeth Taylor starred in the 1949 movie, with the 1994 version starring Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst and Claire Danes with Susan Sarandon. Meredith Baxter and Eve Plumb were in a 1979 miniseries.
