Why Cheryl Ladd stopped dressing up

Cheryl Ladd now feels more at home with herself.

She might be always known as an angel but Cheryl Ladd is clearly down to earth.

The 65-year-old actress admits she doesn’t always play the rules of perfectionism many women in her situation experience. “All little girls want to play dress up. But to do it all over again, day after day after day, it gets … tired,” Ladd told Metro News. “That’s why I like going to the supermarket with a ponytail, blue jeans and sneakers. I’m just this person. It’s a nice way to live.”

She said women have more on their plate than ever before. “We’re supposed to have all of these things [like beauty, exquisite clothes and social graces] lined up like little ducks. It doesn’t leave a lot of room for your true humanity.”

Ladd, who replaced Farah Fawcett on Charlie’s Angels, said they broke the mould for acceptable jobs for women at that time. “It wasn’t that long ago that women were supposed to be teachers and nurses and secretaries.” However she found she worried too much about being beautiful all the time and found it so tiresome. “I don’t have to do any of those things now. I can just be a character, whether it’s a grandmother on the prairie or this very put-together woman. When you have a lot of life under your belt, there’s more to bring to the characters. I’m enjoying it. I say no a lot. I’m pretty picky and choosy these days.”

Her latest movie Unforgettable, with Katherine Heigl is about a woman sets out to make life hell for her ex-husband’s new wife. Ladd plays Heigl’s mother “She was such a delicious person to play,” she said. “Lovey is such a deeply disturbed woman and yet she thinks she’s the great mother on the planet.”

Ladd said she enjoyed working with Heigl too. “She’s just such a wonderful person to be around, which is so funny because she plays not such a nice person,” Heigl said. The movie has already been released in the US and opens in Australian on June 22.

For fans of Ladd from her Charlie’s Angel’s days, there is some interesting news too. Lifelong friends with co-star Jaclyn Smith, the pair are working together on a potential new show for television. Any more news on that, Charlie?
