Today hosts’ bizarre sing-a-long tribute to Top Gun

Fans of Channel 9’s Today Show would be used to its host, Karl Stefanovic, behaving unusually during the light entertainment pieces but today the performance was more embarrassing than usual.

Wanting to pay tribute to the 30th anniversary of the movie Top Gun, Karl and his co-hosts Sylvia Jeffries, Richard Wilkins and Tim Gilbert donned aviator sunglasses inspired by the film and launched into an amateurish rendition of ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feeling’ by the Righteous Brothers.

To say the energy of the Today Show team was lacking is an understatement.

The presenters were completely underwhelming.

Karl’s attempt to lift the liveliness of the ballad led him to carry out some enthusiastic chair dancing, while sports host Tim tried adding the ’60s-inspired ‘doo-wop’ vocal harmony to the segment as it all came to a climax.

You might remember the original scene was led by character Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in a servicemen’s bar.

The movie was a box office smash when it was released in 1986 and continues to be a favourite for its soundtrack and the notorious shirtless men playing volleyball scene.

What did you think of the Today Show’s performance? Are you a Top Gun movie fan?
