New Zealand singer praised by David Bowie’s son for “beautiful” tribute

David Bowie called Lorde the future of music and after the touching tribute he did for him at the BRIT awards, most can agree.

The performance of Bowie’s classic “Life on Mars” received a standing ovation and widespread praise from fans of the music legend, just a week after Lady Gaga’s tribute at the Grammys.

19-year-old Lorde, from New Zealand, joined Bowie’s former band to simply sing one of his biggest songs, a far cry from Gaga’s homage which involved theatrics, a medley and costume changes.

But perhaps the most important opinion is what David Bowie’s son Duncan thinks – he cryptically criticised Lady Gaga’s performance. But he was nothing but thankful in a short tweet that simply read: “Finally found the links to tonight’s Brits. Just… beautiful. Thank you”.

Lorde retweeted this and said, “I was so nervous in the wings, and then I whispered to myself “just sing it to David”, and nothing else mattered”, and it was “such an honour getting to perform #BRITs2016 paying tribute to my hero”.

Fans took to social media after the tribute, which also featured Gary Oldman and Annie Lennox, and echoed the support.

Bowie was posthumously awarded the Icon Award at the ceremony in London on Wednesday night and the music icon’s former backing band paid homage to him by performing a medley of his hits.

Lorde had the pleasure of meeting her idol David, and wrote a Facebook post when she heard the news of his death:

“The night I met him I played at an expensive Vogue benefit … I was not quite seventeen, America was very new to me … I played my three songs, thrashing and twitching in platform boots. Afterward, Anna clasped my hand and said “David wants to meet you,” and led me through people … and he was there.

I’ve never met a hero of mine and liked it … David was different. I’ll never forget the caressing of our hands as we spoke, or the light in his eyes … he heralded me into my next new life, an old rock and roll alien angel in a perfect grey suit. I realised everything I’d ever done, or would do from then on, would be done like maybe he was watching”.
