Johnny Cash and his daughters sing “Silent Night”

He may have passed away in 2003, but many of us at Starts at 60 remember the legendary country singer as he was in his prime.

In 1978, the famous singer took the stage to perform a heartfelt rendition of “Silent Night” as part of his televised Christmas special.

The legendary country star was accompanied by his daughters Rosanne, Cindy, Tara, and Kathy, and his stepdaughters, Carlene and Rosie. Together they sang the beautiful song in dedication to the mother of June Carter, Maybelle Carter, who passed away in October 1978.

“Our family comes to Christmas without ‘Mother’ Maybelle Carter. June’s mother and a member of that trio, the Carter Family, became the first family of country music over 50 years ago,” Cash told the crowd.

“‘Mother’ Maybelle loved the spiritual songs. They recorded a lot of them and they loved the songs of Christmas”.

This beautiful performance is sure to bring a tear to your eye – Johnny clearly loved his daughters, and they were all blessed with such lovely voices.

It’s a perfect way to emphasise the importance of family at Christmas.
