‘Can we please just stop the hysteria over same-sex marriage?’

We are currently in the final throes of the same-sex marriage debate. Thankfully it will all be over soon, and we can get on with life safe from the ridiculous and nonsense ‘No’ campaign ads.

I don’t watch a lot of television but when I do the woman who comes on and claims she has to protect her ‘kid’, as she puts it, from hearing about same-sex marriage drives me crazy.

For me it’s not a matter of protecting your kid, it’s about educating your kid. You can educate them to be as ignorant as you might be, but in the long run with a bit of luck, your child will hear the opposing argument and not find his/her life comes to an end because of it.

Recently I saw a bloke on the TV making comment about choices and having his say heard. He made some sense until I realised he was not addressing the issue of same-sex marriage but rather attempting to generate fear by suggesting that a change to the marriage law would impact on his life.

The plebiscite, a total waste of taxpayer’s money, by the way, asks a simple question on whether or not same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. Yes or no.

It doesn’t say one thing or other about the consequences of your answer.

It asks us to consider giving same-sex couples the same rights as everyone else regarding marriage.

As human beings, we have a fundamental urge to love someone. The love we feel for our respective partners is real no matter what sex they are. If we have children, whether or not we are married, de-facto, same-sex or whatever, we love those children and want for them everything we can possibly give them.

We need to apply common sense to this debate, not hysteria and propoganda suggested.

The world will not end.

Marriages will still occur.

Children will still be born.

Love will always win.

Ultimately, if same-sex marriage continues to bother you, make sure you marry someone of the opposite sex.
