A woman’s love for her dogs has proven stronger than her marriage, and led to her dumping her husband for her furry friends.
After 25 years of marriage, 49-year-old Liz Haslam called it quits with husband Mike, 53, who insisted she choose between him and her 30 dogs.
In a decision that shocked Mike, animal loving Liz – who resides in Suffolk – told the Daily Mail, she didn’t think twice about choosing her beloved pooches over her husband.
While many pet owners are guilty of treating their beloved animals more like children than a pet, Liz’s furry family has grown exponentially over the past few years through her foundation BedforBullies, to the point where caring for them has become similar to a full-time job.
Although together since high school, the flurry of bull terrier’s – many of which have health or behavioural conditions – pushed Mike over the edge, ending in an ultimatum for his wife.
“He felt as though he wanted his own life back but I said it is too much of a passion of mine to give up,” Liz told the Daily Mail.
“It just got to the point where he was fed up with the dogs and wanted to slow down but that wasn’t my intention.
“He knew from the moment that we got together what I was all about. I don’t know what he expected.”
Despite the financial burden of looking after so many dogs, Liz insists she’s living a much happier life, working 18 hours a day looking after her dogs and more recently, a homeless man.
The loving dog mother is also on the hunt for a new home after being notified by her landlord that she has a year to vacate due to unpaid rent.
“I have re-homed so many dogs and now I am looking for a home,” she said.
“I have chosen to do this. I love it. And I can’t just turn around and say I am not going to do it anymore, it is my responsibility, I took the dogs in, I can’t just stop.”
