Today’s Georgie Gardner recalls terrifying confrontation with home invader

The Today show host Georgie Gardner has recalled the terrifying moment she came face to face with a brazen burglar who broke into her apartment while she was at home.

Speaking on the Channel Nine show on Monday morning, following the news that Top Gear star Ricard Hammond had been gassed and robbed in St Tropez, the 48-year-old confessed she too has suffered a frightening encounter, with hers taking place in the safety of her own home.

“Well, I did confront a burglar once,” Gardner told co-host Karl Stefanovic, reports The Daily Mail. “And I chased him down the stairs of the apartment block.”

Recalling the series of events that took place, the mother-of-two admitted it was probably “really a dumb thing to do”. “I flew down the stairs to fight,” Gardner said. “He was putting the keys in the front door and I opened it and there he was. He had stolen the bag with the keys in it.”

The co-host explained how she was full of rage after realising the thief had already taken claim to a number of items and was coming back for more.

“I was cross,” she said. “He had already stolen the television and he’d come back for more. I reckon he was coming back for the remote control. He had left that behind, I mean that was useless to me.”

Known for her bubbly on-screen persona, the star also opened up about her recent health scare on Monday’s episode of the hit breakfast TV show.

Just last week, Gardner sent a powerful warning to her fans, revealing that she had battled skin cancer for a third time, showing off her bandaged face after having two more cancers removed from her face.

While she confirmed they were thankfully not melanomas, the TV star – clearly shaken by the ordeal – urged her Instagram followers to take care of themselves in the Australian sun and book regular skin checks.

“Feeling a little flat after 2 more skin cancers removed, BUT counting my blessings they’re NOT melanomas. Can’t overstate enough to get your skin checked & slap on the sunscreen!! #besunsmartpeople,” she wrote, while sharing a photo of her taped up scar along her hairline.

This is the third cancer scare for Georgie, and she previously took to social media to warn fans of the importance of checking their skin. Just last year, the newsreader shared a photo of herself on Instagram with a big white bandage on her back after having a skin cancer cut out.

“Another skin cancer cut out & a call out to get your skin checked people!!” she wrote on the post.
