Horror as two giant pythons smash through couple’s roof

An Australian couple were given the ultimate fright this week after a pair of mating scrub pythons fell through their ceiling.

Matt Hagan, of the Cairns Snake Catcher, was called to a home in northern Queensland over the weekend after the owners spotted a huge crack in their ceiling. When he arrived to the house, the snake catcher discovered the two five-metre scrub pythons in the roof.

Hagan said trying to catch the snakes was pretty difficult, prompting the cracked ceiling to give way completely.

“Extracting this dynamic duo was no easy feat and ultimately resulted in the ceiling giving way as these snakes made a particularly dramatic entry into the office!” the snake catcher wrote on the company’s Facebook page, alongside a series of photographs that are enough to make the skin of anyone who hates the reptiles crawl.

Hagan added call outs like this are far from unusual during the breeding season, which runs from July to the end of September.

“Scrub python breeding season is off with a BANG….in the roof!” he wrote.

“If you are lucky enough to host a scrub python party in your roof space this breeding season (end of July to late September) it can get pretty wild as males fight each other to impress females.

“Occasionally these interactions can result in strange smells wafting through different rooms, and even structural damage to your house in the form or ceiling stains or cracks.”

It’s not the first time a pair of snakes have been spotted in an unusual hiding spot. In September last year, a Brisbane family got the fright of their life when a pair of coastal carpet pythons fell through a vent in the roof and into the bedroom of their suburban Brisbane home.

A video, shared on the Snake Catchers Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan and Gold Coast Facebook page, showed two 1.75-metre snakes locked in a combat battle.

While it almost looked as though the two snakes were attempting to mate, the snake catcher in the video confirmed they were actually two males who were fighting with each other.

Because snake breeding season has begun, there is an increased risk residents will see a snake or two in their homes, backyards, schools and other urban areas as they search for a mate. In the event of a snake sighting, it’s always best to contact a snake catcher so it can be safely relocated. Trying to capture it yourself can increase the risk of danger not only for you, but for the snake.

Have you had any nasty encounters with snakes this breeding season? Where is the weirdest place you’ve ever spotted a snake?
