The second child of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Princess Anne was born Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise on 15 August 1950 at Clarence House, now home to Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
As she celebrated her 68th birthday on Wednesday with a rare day off from public engagements, the British Royal family shared a series of sweet tributes and photographs of Her Royal Highness.
The Princess Royal turned 68 on Wednesday and her siblings were among those to wish her a “very happy birthday”, with Prince Andrew and Prince Charles both sharing personal messages to their only sister on social media.
Heir to the throne, the Prince of Wales, 70, shared a heartwarming image of himself and Anne at the 2009 Highland Games, in Scotland, which showed the pair laughing raucously, alongside the caption: “Happy birthday to HRH The Princess Royal.”
Andrew, Duke of York, opted for a photograph of his big sister in full military regalia, on horseback, as the pair rode alongside one another at Trooping the Colour in June this year. The 58-year-old wrote: “Wishing The Princess Royal a very Happy Birthday.”
While a message posted on the royal family’s official Twitter account paid tribute to her passion for horses and charity work.
“The Princess Royal has a busy schedule of engagements which see her travel widely across the UK and overseas,” it read. “Known for her love of horses and an equestrian career which saw her compete in the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, Her Royal Highness is involved with riding for the disabled organisations across the Commonwealth.
“Much of her time is also spent supporting the work of Save the Children, of which she has been President since 1970.”
Many fans of the royals wished HRH a happy birthday too, with one fan praising her as “a model ambassador” while others credited her for her work ethic as, in 2015, she was the busiest royal, attending 544 events in that year alone.
