Dramatic moment a Norwegian Cruise ship crashes into dock in Puerto Rico

A Norwegian cruise ship crashed into a dock in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Tuesday, with concerned passengers capturing the dramatic incident on camera.

According to reports, the Norwegian Epic was navigating the Port of San Juan, aided by two tugboats, when strong winds caused the ship to veer toward the docks.

A clip posted online shows the moment high winds pushed the vessel, which was carrying more than 4,000 passengers, into the pier, crushing two concrete mooring points into pieces.

“It seems like we’re going hit,” one man is heard saying in one clip. “Yeah, we’re not supposed to do that. That’s not good. Yeah, we just crashed into the pier.”

In another video posted on Twitter, the ship is seen slamming into one mooring point before sinking the structure. The ship then steers towards the pier, crashing into a second mooring point.

Additional photos shared to social media appear to show large scrapes across the hull of the ship.

“It should buff out pretty easy right,” one passenger joked on Twitter. “I’m onboard and it’s been one crazy ride. Some passengers were asking about ending their trip early and just flying back to the states from [Puerto Rico].”

No injuries were reported after the incident, which the cruise line blamed on “prevailing winds”.

“Today as Norwegian Epic was manoeuvring into Port of San Juan, Puerto Rico with a local pilot on board and the help of two tug boats, prevailing winds caused the ship to veer towards the pier, damaging two mooring points at Pier 3 East,” Norwegian Cruise Lines said in a brief statement obtained by The Daily Mail.

“No injuries have been reported and guests are currently disembarking the ship as previously scheduled. We are working closely with local authorities to assess the damage.”

The ship left from Florida’s Port Canaveral on February 9 for a seven-day cruise around the British Virgin Islands, but power outages onboard forced its crew to divert to Puerto Rico. The Norwegian Epic is expected to return to Florida on Saturday.
