A man is being treated for injuries to his leg after being attacked by a shark off the coast of New South Wales on Sunday Morning — the latest in a spate of attacks recently.
It is believed the 36-year-old was surfing near Scotts Head Beach when he was bitten on the leg by a shark at around 7am.
According to 9 News, he was treated at the scene before being flown to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, where he’s in a serious but stable condition.
A spokeswoman from the NSW Department of Primary Industries told ABC News that authorities were not yet aware which type of shark was responsible for the attack.
It comes after a string of shark attacks in recent weeks, with a kayaker attacked on a beach in Manly late last month. It has since prompted a fresh debate over shark culling.
According to multiple reports, the kayaker was fishing about 1.5 kilometres from Moffat Beach at Caloundra when the 4 metre-long shark “slammed” into him, sending him flying into the water.
On November 5 Melbourne doctor Daniel Christidis was fatally savaged by a shark in the Whitsundays in Queensland.
The 33-year-old was swimming off a charter boat in the iconic Whitsundays tourist hotspot when he was attacked. Despite being rushed to Mackay Hospital, he didn’t survive. He suffered major blood loss and was resuscitated twice, but died as a result of his injuries. His death came six weeks after two others were attacked in a similar area.
If you do happen to come across a shark, there are a number of things you can do to protect yourself. While your first instinct is probably to swim away as quickly as possible, it’s really important not to make any sudden movements.
This doesn’t mean playing dead (the shark will likely eat you anyway), but being smart about the movements you make. Your main priority will be defending yourself, so it’s important not to let the shark out of your sight.
If you do have to launch an attack, it’s best to try and aim for the shark’s eyes or gills. While it is said that you should always try and punch a shark on its nose, it’s best to aim for other areas first so you don’t accidentally get your hand bitten off. It’s also a good idea to use other objects to fight the shark where possible.
