Following the death of US war veteran Senator John McCain on Saturday, People magazine have printed the heartbreaking story of his mother Roberta McCain’s crippling grief over the loss of her child.
The popular American magazine claims to have spoken to an insider, believed to be close to Roberta, who relayed the immense heartache the 106-year-old has felt after her son John passed away at the age of 81, following a battle with brain cancer.
And the reports just go to show that the sadness caused by losing a child is just as raw and distressing at any age, with the source claiming it was a “tough blow” to McCain’s beloved mother to bury her own child.
“Roberta was his biggest supporter and the leader of his fan club,” the source told People. “She was incredibly proud of him. His mommy loved him. He knew that.”
The pair were known to have enjoyed a strong bond, with Roberta often pictured supporting her politician son throughout his career. Describing Roberta as a “very strong woman”, the source told the magazine it was heartbreaking for her to see John succumb to the terrible disease.
“I can only imagine what she’s going through,” they added. “She outlived her 81-year-old son. That tells you a lot. But it’s a tough blow to bury your child.”
The former prisoner of war’s death was confirmed by his office on Saturday night (US time) just hours after his family released a statement announcing he had made the decision to stop cancer treatment.
Taking to Twitter wife Cindy shared a tear-jerking message with the public on the heartbreak experienced over her loving husband’s death.
“My heart is broken. I am so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years. He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the the place he loved best,” she wrote.
That was followed by a loving message from their daughter Meghan, who recalled her father’s final moments in a lengthy note, shared online.
