Diver’s amazing footage of giant Great White shark leaves people gobsmacked

People across the world have been left absolutely gobsmacked by the size of a massive shark that was captured on camera by a brave marine biologist this week.

Instagram user OceanRamsey shared a mind-blowing video on social media on Thursday, showing her casually bracing shark-infested water in Hawaii to get up close and personal with the mighty beast.

The keen diver showed no sign of fear while observing and swimming dangerously close to the Great White Shark, which has been described by many as the biggest they have ever seen.

In the post, that quickly reached headlines, the shark can be seen swimming right towards the diver, getting so close she ends up reaching out and stroking it gently.

It doesn’t show the slightest inclination of wanting to attack her and simply swims past as other divers watch on in anticipation.

The conservationist, who posts regularly about her diving experiences with the creatures, used the video to highlight the kind nature of sharks and hatred she possesses towards the culling or harming of them.

“I waited quietly, patiently, observing as she swam up to the dead sperm whale carcass and then slowly to me passing close enough I gently put y hand out to maintain a small space so her girth could pass,” she wrote on the post, which was quickly shared around social media.

“I know some people criticize [sic] touch by what some don’t realize [sic] is that sometimes sharks seek touch, she swam away escorted by two rough-toothed dolphins who danced around her over to one of my @oneoceandiving shark research vessels and proceeded to use it as a scratching post, passing up feeding for another need.”

She went on to explain how she wished more people would understand that sharks shouldn’t be harmed.

“I wish more people would have a connection with sharks and the natural world, because then they would understand that it’s not petting sharks or pushing them off to maintain a respectable space that is hurting sharks (because trust me if she didn’t like being pet she can handle and communicate),” she said.

“It’s the wasteful and cruel practice of grabbing and catching sharks to cut off their fine (which slowly kills them) for #sharkfinsoup in a process called #sharkfinning or the wasteful #sharkfishing or #sharksportfishing.”

Her post has received plenty of comments from concerned and supportive followers. While some were absolutely shocked and scared that someone would voluntarily get so close to the shark, the majority praised the diver for the work she does in protecting the species.

“You go girl! I love the words and so happy a sea angel found her way to you. Awesome experience I’m jealous! Also hopefully this gets some more steam to give you more platform to discuss how these are predators we need and not ruthless mindless killing machines,” one person wrote.

“I don’t think they look at humans as prey, they target seals more often which is why surfboards are attacked more often. I think great whites are more calm in a sense where they won’t attack everything they see it’s the bull sharks and tiger sharks that are most aggressive towards humans,” another added.

While a third simply said: “Absolutely amazing, very jealous!”
