They have a 26-year age gap between them and Penny Lancaster has now admitted she’s been forced to face the prospect she may one day have to live life without her husband Rod Stewart – revealing she plans to follow her mum and Rod’s sister’s lead, should it happen.

Speaking on UK daytime TV show Loose Women, the panellist, 48, discussed what her life could be like when she’s in her 70s – aware it could mean she no longer has Rod, 74, by her side.

“Rod’s in his 70s, early 70s, and we have a huge family base at home and there’s a lot of activities. My life is based on the family… The children will be grown up and gone so I kind of feel like I need to prepare,” she said.

“But my mum and Rod’s sister [are] great examples in their 70s and beyond, and they have a huge number of friends who they have great weekends away with and hobbies and they keep themselves busy all the time, in fact I can never track them down. I think if I follow their guidelines I’ll be just fine.”

Penny was speaking as part of a segment on the show called “Do you fear growing old alone?” and when asked if she’d be more likely to form a strong friendship group rather than find another life partner, should she ever lose Rod, Penny added: “Yeah.”

It comes after the model surprised her fans when she happily posed with Rod and three of his previous partners, all of whom he’s fathered children with, recently.

Though it may seem strange to some, with many people avoiding even phone conversations with their ex or deliberately crossing the street to save having to exchange niceties, the group appeared in good spirits as they joined together to celebrate the 40th birthday of one of Rod’s daughters. The singer has eight children in total to five different women and, if this picture is anything to go by, the majority are apparently still quite friendly with one another.

Rod took prime position in the photo, as he stood happily alongside current wife Penny, former girlfriend and model Kelly Emberg, second wife Rachel Hunter and his first wife Alana Stewart. You’d think there would be some awkwardness in the snap but all seemed happy to be there together with big smiles spread across their faces.

The five were even seen linking arms around one another with clearly no tension between the group – far from the typical scenes expected ex-lovers are forced together in one room. The happy photo was shared on social media by Kelly as she wished Kimberly Stewart a happy 40th birthday.

In the post on Instagram she wrote: “#happybirthday @thekimberlystewart! Can’t believe you are 40! You looked radiant last night! You looked radiant last night! #birthdaybash. A mother’s reunion!” Fans were quick to comment on the happy snap with many claiming how lovely it was to see them all together for the special occasion.

“How lovely to see all you all together being mum, wives and grandmothers, just great,” one person commented on Instagram. Another wrote: “What an amazing family you all are.” While a third said: “That’s quite a reunion!”
