Lisa Curry put a lighthearted spin on the current situation sweeping Australia, as she shared a series of photographs of the one-of-a-kind face masks she has knitted among the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

The 57-year-old former competitive swimmer took to Instagram on Wednesday and encouraged her followers to get crafty when it comes to protecting themselves and others, suggesting they put their knitting, crocheting or recycling skills to good use to create homemade masks.

While the masks are not medical grade and may do little to contain any form of virus or bacteria, many of Lisa’s followers commended her for putting a smile on their faces, while one described her efforts as “the best looking mask I have ever seen”.

Lisa shared two photographs online of herself and Elvis-impersonator husband Mark modelling the masks she knitted – hers a plethora of colours, including pink, purple and peach, while Mark opted for a plain black version.

Alongside the photos, she wrote: “If you need a mask or can’t buy a mask … then make one ! Crochet, knit, use an old shirt and cut it up with some elastic, use a bandana … whatever.”

“And …. STOP HOARDING FOOD and [toilet paper]. Just buy the food you need for a week at a time,” she added. “And….. STOP abusing sales staff in supermarkets… it’s completely unnecessary and very Un-Australian.

“A few of my friends work in supermarkets and they are completely drained. Don’t bite the hands that feed you !! Take care of each other and continue to support local businesses.”

As well as praising the masks, many people rallied around Lisa and backed up her claims for people to calm down when it comes to panic buying and to respect supermarket workers.

One wrote: “Thanks Lisa about the abuse of retail staff. I am mentally and physically exhausted from my work place and it seems like no end in sight to this insane behaviour. It is so sad that it has come to this. I have never seen anything like this in over 40 years of retail.”

Another commented: ” It’s appalling the behaviour of some people … People need to get a grip and be kind.” While another said: “It’s getting ugly & Im almost embarrassed to admit I’m Australian.”
