Australian sporting icon Lisa Curry has revealed that her new year didn’t get off to the best of starts as she was rushed to hospital in Melbourne on New Year’s Day after she woke up unable to breathe.

The 57-year-old shared the worrying news on social media and told her 60,000 followers that she had been out for lunch with friends before the respiratory problem occurred, which also left her with a swollen throat and tongue.

“My goal for the year was to slow the heck down … before I even got a chance to slow down, I ended up here in a Melbourne hospital,” she wrote on Instagram on Wednesday evening.

“New Years Day lovely lunch with friends, go home for a nana nap, woke up unable to breathe… my throat and tongue swollen and so scary not to be able to get a proper breath.”

Lisa went on to say that the illness was likely caused by airborne allergies, perhaps from plants, but said has “no idea” why it happened and credited her immune system and stress for the episode.

Despite the scare taking place over a week ago, Lisa said she has only just started to feel herself again, adding: “Only starting to feel a little human today. Stay strong everyone and remember to rest.”

She added: “We only tend to slow down when we are FORCED to. When we feel ok, we keep pushing and pushing.”

Many people wished the grandmother a speedy recovery on social media, while others said that they were also planning to take a step back and slow down in 2020.

One well-wisher wrote: “Oh sending love, that would have been stressful. Best wishes with your recovery.” Another commented: “Bless you Lisa. Focus on getting the rest your body needs. Don’t ignore what your body is telling you.”

While television star Grant Denyer wrote: “Hope you feel better soon. Take these messages from your body. It’s telling you something. Been there. Hope to see you back on your feet glowing, resting and happy in 2020. X”

Lisa was married to former Ironman and surf lifesaver Grant Kenny from 1986 until they separated in 2009. They share three children, Morgan, Jett and Jaimi Lee, together and are also grandparents to Flynn, the young son of daughter Morgan and her husband Ryan Gruell.

Throughout her swimming career, Lisa became the only Australian swimmer to have held Commonwealth and Australian records in every stroke except backstroke, as well as competing in three Olympic Games in Moscow (1980), Los Angeles (1984) and Barcelona (1992)
