Elton John has opened up about the struggles of life and said it was his children who brought purpose to his life again after partner David Furnish warned the singer he would die on stage.
Speaking on American morning show Lorraine, the 72-year-old said everything changed when son Zachary came into their lives eight years ago, followed by Elijah two years later.
The singer explained the couple knew there was more to life than performing and travelling around the globe.
“10 years ago David said, ‘you’re going to die on stage, we’re going to be going around the world just two gay guys and having a great time but not really with any purpose,” Elton said on program Lorraine.

“And then of course everything turned when we had the children and thank god it did. I wouldn’t have wanted that end to my like like that.”
Elton continued: “I wanted a purpose in my life and I was given a purpose with these two boys and they’ve changed everything. I don’t want to be away from them, I hate being away from them.”
Asked how he does manage the time away from his kids, Elton said he makes the most of video service FaceTime, however, it’s not the same as being together in person.
It’s no surprise that Elton has had a rocky journey to date, some of which has to do with his battle with drug and alcohol addiction. The ‘Tiny Dancer’ star said he’s blessed to have the life he does, but he nearly lost it all because of his addiction.
“At 72 years of age it’s getting better,” he explained on Lorraine. “Every night, I say my prayers and think – thank you so much, this is ridiculous.
“I mean I’ve had horrible things happen. People are now dying who are my age. My friends die. Every week there’s someone who’s ill. Relatives die and that’s a part of life.
“But now I know how to handle it. I don’t have to run away and shut the door and have a bottle of whisky anymore. I can, you know … grow up a little bit.”
Elton went on say he is feeling “very fit” and recently received the best medical results he’s ever had. The singer said this was amazing news and means he’ll be able to watch his beloved children grow up.
“I want to see them be teenagers,” Elton said. “I want to be there for them and I don’t want to miss a beat.”
I am blessed Lorraine, of what I’ve been able to achieve. I nearly lost it all because of my addiction. I got it back because I worked very hard to become sober. But I’ve been so lucky and so fortunate to have had the life I’ve had.
