Three people have died and two more have been rescued after their catamaran overturned off the New South Wales coast on Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Newcastle, about 165km north of Sydney, at about 10.10am after the group of people fell into the water from their 11.7m catamaran, which was approximately 7 nautical miles off the coast of Stockton Beach.

NSW Police confirmed officers from Marine Area Command responded, together with Marine Rescue Association and the RAAF, and were coordinated by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

Emergency services were able to rescue two of the occupants who were transported to the John Hunter Hospital, while the other three were pronounced dead.

Speaking about the incident on Thursday afternoon a NSW Ambulance spokesman said a Westpac helicopter winched two people from the water who were found clutching onto the overturned vessel.

“Westpac has winched two occupants from the vessel, appears to be young girl in her teens and a male in his mid 40s on board westpac and transported to hospital,” he said in a press conference.

“Unfortunately the other three on board they were found to be, they were unable to be retrieved.”

The reports for weather conditions were quite high at sea on Thursday, with strong winds approximately 30 knots.

NSW Police are currently managing the matter.
