The body of a baby was found by workers on the side of a Sunshine Coast road after falling from the roof of a funeral car travelling from Rockhampton to a mortuary in Brisbane on Thursday.
According to the Courier Mail, the body was mistakenly left on the roof of the vehicle before departing Rockhampton and was not discovered missing until the car arrived in Brisbane.
The road workers who found the baby reportedly called police after making the gruesome discovery and the Sunshine Coast Criminal Investigation Branch attended the scene early Thursday morning.
The workers who found the baby’s body are said to be traumatised.
A Queensland Health spokesperson called the incident “incredibly distressing” and told Starts at 60 an independent private funeral transporter was at the centre of the investigation.
“We have stopped use of the service,” they said. “We are writing to the contractor to ask them why they should not be permanently removed from state government work.”
Queensland Police told Starts at 60 it is aware of the incident and that it is not considered suspicious. It is not being treated as a police matter and will be investigated further by Queensland Health.
