Princess Charlene of Monaco has earned a name for herself as Europe’s most fashion-forward royal and she doesn’t look likely to give up her title anytime soon, stepping out in two striking outfits on Monday.

The South African-born princess looked typically chic in a monochrome ensemble on Monday morning to celebrate Monaco’s National Day.

Charlene, 40, opted for a patterned coat and black midi skirt for the occasion and accessorised with a pair of Dior pearl earrings, while her husband, Prince Albert, 60, dressed in a military uniform.

Monaco’s National Day, which is also known as the Sovereign Prince’s Day, is celebrated on the day that Prince Albert took the throne. Traditionally, each subsequent prince chose the day of the saint they were named after, but Albert broke tradition, choosing the same day as his father, Prince Rainier III. The action-packed day included a military parade, marching bands and fireworks.

Later, the royal couple stepped out again, and this time the princess wore an elegant ballgown.

Charlene looked every bit the royal superstar as she posed on the red carpet in the figure-hugging gown, which featured a saucy side split. She completed her glamorous look with red lipstick, silver dangling earrings and wore her hair waved for the occasion.

Like her late mother-in-law Grace Kelly, Charlene joined the royal family as an outsider having no royal connections of her own prior to meeting Prince Albert. Charlene met Albert at a swimming competition in 2000 – the same year she represented South Africa in the pool at the Sydney Olympics.

However, she has since thrown herself into royal life with her days filled of official engagements and charity work. She’s a regular fixture on Europe’s royal scene and has earned a reputation as a down-to-earth princess who’s not afraid to roll up her sleeves and do the hard work.

She also regularly accompanies her husband to glamorous events in their home country throughout the year, with fashion magazines eagerly awaiting to see what stylish outfit she’s picked for the red carpet.

Earlier this year she drew oos and ahhs when she stepped out with Albert at the annual Monte Carlo Gala, in a navy blue frock which included an intricate silver glittered pattern and sheer material across one of her shoulders.

When she’s not busy with her royal duties, Charlene is looking after the couple’s three-year-old twins Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques.
