‘Bad boy’ Nick Kyrgios slapped with $11.5K fine for unsportsmanlike conduct

Nick Kyrgios is renowned for his ‘bad boy’ behaviour, and now the controversial tennis star has been handed two fines for unsportsmanlike conduct during his failed Wimbledon campaign.

Kyrgios, who has found himself in hot water over his on-court antics during the UK tournament, received two fines totalling $US8,000 (AU$11,471) on Tuesday.

According to a news.com.au report, the Australian tennis player received one fine of US$3,000 relating to his first round win over Jordan Thompson and then US$5,000 for his second round loss to Rafael Nadal.

The 24-year-old crashed out of The Championships last Thursday after being beaten by Nadal, however it was his antics during the first set which garnered the most attention as he had some cross words with umpire Damien Dumosois.

Kyrgios was landed with a code violation due to the exchange, in which he branded Dumosois a “disgrace” and called out the official for exploiting the “power” he has as an umpire, according to BBC Sport.

The row began when Kyrgios complained about Nadal’s speed of play, asking Dumosois: “Why am I waiting to serve?” He then went on to say: “When he’s serving, he’s controlling the temp.

“Why do I have to wait for my serve? Why am I waiting? Why? It’s too long between serves, it’s bulls***. It’s ridiculous.”

It didn’t end there though, as Kyrgios then mocked the chair umpire about the “power” he has in his chair which saw him slapped with a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Meanwhile, tennis favourite Serena Williams has also been hit with a hefty fine of $US10,000 for damaging one of the Wimbledon courts with her racquet during a practice session.

It comes after Aussie tennis star Bernard Tomic was fined £45,000 (AU$81,000) last week after he crashed out of Wimbledon in one of the shortest matches in history .

The Aussie lost to French player Jo Wilfried-Tsonga in a very quick 58 minute match, going down 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 with many claiming at the time that the player failed to put any effort into his game.

Wimbledon made the choice not to grant Tomic his first round prize money of $81,00o, the tournament confirmed in a statement.

“All players are expected to perform to a professional standard in every Grand Slam match,” Wimbledon said, according to multiple news outlets.

“With respect to first round performance, if in the opinion of the referee the player did not perform to the required professional standard, the referee may determine that the player be subject to a fine of up to first round prize money.

“It is the opinion of the referee that the performance of Bernard Tomic in his first round match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga did not meet the required professional standards, and therefore he has been fined the maximum amount of £45,000 which will be deducted from prize money.”
