A 75-year-old man has been left with a broken heart and an empty wallet after being conned out £20,000 (AU$34,425) by a fake girlfriend.
Simon Frost thought he was beginning a new and exciting relationship after matching with young woman, who called herself Eva, on an online dating site, The Mirror reported.
But sadly that was not the case for the UK grandfather, who fell victim to a cruel con-artist who had been using photos of US porn star Briana Lee to pose as his new love interest on the fake profile.
According to the publication, it all began in early 2017 when Simon joined website Real Sex Contacts, looking for a new relationship, 10 years after his wife had left him. Here he met Eva, a young African woman who claimed to be a hospital worker from Ghana.
After chatting for a while the con-artist convinced him to hand over a whopping £20,000 to apparently help pay for access to court documents so that she could access her father’s £5 million (AU$8.5M) inheritance.
It wasn’t until August this year when Eva failed to show up to their meeting in the UK, that Simon realised she was not a real person and he had been tricked into parting with his money.
Speaking to The Mirror Simon claimed he had believed everything she said and thought he was going to be able to clear his debts and buy a house for them to live in together.
“She clearly had no intention of coming here. I was lonely, and I still am, and I was looking for company. Eva seemed genuine. But I was obviously an easy target,” he told the publication.
To make things worse, since transferring to money to Ghana Simon has been locked out of his bank account. His daughter is now having to pay his bills and help with the debt he has been forced into.
Sadly, Simon is not the only one to fall victim to romance fraud. Only recently a widow admitted she feels “stupid” for spending £90,000 (AU$159K) on her toy boy husband – who was shockingly murdered just a few short years after she moved abroad to set up home with him.
Brit woman Diane De Zoysa, 60, from Edinburgh, met 26-year-old Priyanjana De Zoysa while on holiday in Sri Lanka seven years ago – before marrying him seven months later, the Daily Record reports.
Shockingly, the news outlet reports Priyanjana was shot and killed last year after blackmailers learned he had come into money – leaving Diane in debt, having given away her entire life savings to the marriage.
Following his death, it’s claimed Diane became suspicious that he had married someone else – a local teenager – behind her back, but was unable to return home to seek comfort from her own family following the huge deception.
Instead, she claimed her husband’s relatives refused to help her sell the house there and even made her feel like a “prisoner”.
Having finally returned home, she told the news outlet: “I just couldn’t stay there any longer. I kind of feel stupid now that I didn’t listen to my family and my friends because they said it was just about the money.
“I thought he did really love me but obviously he didn’t.”
