Nothing is more annoying than having an ear full of wax. It can affect your hearing, cause itchiness and be uncomfortable—not to mention it can also look pretty unsavory if some of it happens to make its way to the outside of your ear.
An excess of ear wax usually occurs when you have been sick or you have not washed out your ears in a while.
Ear wax itself is actually a good substance that is produced by the body to protect your ears from harmful bacteria and debris. The ear wax provides a sticky substance to capture any harmful invaders before they reach the inner ear.
While having a small amount of ear wax is great, it is still important to flush out old ear wax to keep your ears fresh. Here are some tips to help you out:
Salt water is an inexpensive and easy solution to shift any annoying ear wax. A saline solution is easy to make using ingredients you have at home. Salt water works by softening the ear wax so it can easily slide out of the ear.
To make an effective saline solution simply add half a cup of warm water with a teaspoon of salt. Stir the mixture until the salt is completely dissolved. Making sure the mixture is warm and not hot, dip a cotton ball in the solution. Tilt your ear, parallel with the sky and squeeze the cotton ball to put a few drops of the solution in your ear. Stay with your ear titled for five minutes then tilt your head in the opposite direction and let the solution and the wax drain onto a tissue. Clean the outside and inside of your ear with a soft tissue to remove any leftover wax.
Another easy way to get rid of unwanted earwax is olive oil. On top of softening the ear wax, its antiseptic properties also reduce the risk of ear infections.
To use olive oil as an ear wax remover, simply warm some olive oil slightly and put into a dropper. Tilt your ear to the sky and place a few drops inside. It is a good idea to lie down as you need to let the mixture settle for ten minutes. When your time is up, tilt your head back and let the oil and wax flow out onto a tissue. You can carefully use a q-tip to remove any excess wax-just make sure you don’t push the wax further inside.
This age-old remedy is an oldie but a goodie. This solution will remove excess wax by dissolving the ear wax. The rubbing alcohol works as a drying agent and evaporates at low temperatures. The vinegar also serves as a deterrent for bacteria, fungi, and ear infections. Is there anything vinegar can’t do?
To use this solution, mix equal parts in both vinegar and rubbing alcohol. Dip a cotton ball in the mixture and use it to deposit a few drops of the solution in the ear. Tilt your head to the sky and let the solution settle for five minutes. After the allocated time has passed, tilt your head back up and let the mixture drain into a tissue. Often times you may feel a slight bubbling sensation when using this method. This solution also works as a great treatment for swimmers ear.
Hydrogen peroxide is an extremely effective way to get rid of earwax—it is even used in many commercially available ear-wax-removal solutions. Hydrogen peroxide has many effervescent properties making it able to clear the ear canal very easily.
To clear your ear with this method, mix equal parts warm water and hydrogen peroxide. Use a dropper to place the mixture in your ear. Tilt your head to the side and leave for 6 minutes. Drain your ear out by tilting your ear the opposite way and wipe away any remaining wax with a tissue.
Baking Soda is known for it’s cleaning properties; did you know it can also be used to remove earwax? A baking soda solution is an effective remedy for softening compacted ear wax to ensure an easy removal.
To use this method mix 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with 2 teaspoons of water. Once combined use a dropper to place a few drops in your ear as you tilt your ear to the sky. After 5 minutes tilt your head back the other way to drink the wax and remove any remaining with a tissue.
Next time you get a blocked ear and can’t get out to the chemist, use some of these natural methods for some fast acting relief. If you regularly get bad ear wax use these solutions once every couple of days.
